Before the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations [AFCON] competition, former Black Stars forward Joetex Frimpong made it clear that he disagreed strongly with the decision to remove Chris Hughton as coach of the Ghana national team, the Black Stars.
In February 2023, Chris Hughton was appointed as the Black Stars’ coach. Many have begun to demand that the coach be sacked due to the team’s poor performance, which was made evident in their recent losses against Mexico and the United States, in which they let up an embarrassing six goals.
In spite of all of this, Joetex made it very evident that he disagreed with the choice. “With two months until the AFCON kicks off, I don’t think showing Chris Hughton the exit door is a very smart move. The team would have to find a new coach with a different approach if he was fired, which is not how things are done in football. As 1Family Radio listened closely, he said on Kesseben FM, “Let’s give him a chance to lead the team into the AFCON; if he doesn’t do well, we fire him.”
Ghana experienced one of its worst tournament performances in the 2021 AFCON, finishing the competition in the group stages.
Ghana will compete in the 2023 AFCON in Group B alongside Egypt, Cape Verde, and Mozambique.
