Media personality and mental health advocate Abena Korkor has opened up about her bipolar disease and how it affects her social media life.
According to Abena Korkor, she has been the victim of attacks due to misconceptions regarding her battle with bipolar disorder, which have occasionally led people to believe that she performs some “unwarranted” activities for attention.
Abena Korkor has come under fire and attention from the public for acting irresponsibly during her episodes, which are typically characterized by spikes in energy and rash comments made on social media.
Speaking in an interview on Graphic Showbiz, monitored by 1Family Radio, Abena made it clear that she never sets out to deliberately jeopardize someone’s reputation.
“It’s painful that people feel like it’s a personal attack when I’m at my weakest, and I mention names. It is never my intention to target anyone,’’ she said.
“I don’t have control over how it happens, and I hope people don’t interpret it as a deliberate attack on them,’’ Abena noted.
Abena claimed that her critics were compelled to attack her for actions over which she had little influence because there was a broad lack of awareness about her mental health issues.
“People attack me out of ignorance, and it is important to educate the public about mental health conditions.’’
In response to questions about how she handles cyberbullying, Abena Korkor stated that she avoids giving cyberbullying too much attention in favor of her advocacy work and her quest for mental health.
“I don’t engage with cyberbullies; they don’t deserve my energy,’’ she added.
Abena also revealed that she takes comfort in her relationships with celebrities who suffer from the same illness, as they serve as a supportive network that gives her the strength and understanding she needs to deal with her mental health issues.
