Godfred Ayittey, a driver found guilty of trying to kidnap a businessman and his daughter for motives, was sentenced to eight years in prison and hard labor by an Accra Circuit court.
According to the Ghana News Agency [GNA], the accused driver, who first refuted the claims, was found guilty following a trial; nevertheless, his accomplice, Wang Liang, is still at large.
The case started on August 3, 2022, when Richard Asomaning, a trial witness, reported to the Tema Police. Asomanning revealed that Ayittey had solicited him via phone to take part in the abduction scheme. Asomaning also sent Ayittey copies of his Ghanaian identity and driver’s license, as well as those of another recruit named Peter Ofoe Agbovie.
In an attempt to learn more, the witness asked to speak with Ayittey in order to identify the intended victims. Speaking only over the phone, Ayittey named the victims as Mr. Joseph K. Horgle Transport and Company Limited and Elinam, his daughter, who works for the same company as the deputy managing director.
Ayittey planned the operation over the phone, setting up a WhatsApp group, even though she had never seen the witness in person. He sent Asomaning money so that Agbovie could rent a car, and Ayittey made plans to buy weaponry for the mission.
When the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) entered the case, it was discovered that Ayittey had previously worked from 2017 to 2018 as a driver for the intended victim’s business.
On August 9, 2022, Ayittey was located and taken into custody. Upon being charged, he identified Wang Liang as the mastermind. Investigations revealed that Ayittey had been using Jiji Online, a job-seeking website, to smuggle people into the evil scheme.
