Dr. Gideon Baako, the spokesperson for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has denied claims that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is a citizen of the United Kingdom.
His statement follows the allegations by former ambassador to India Sam Pee Yalley and Dr. Clement Abas Apaak, the lawmaker for Builsa South, that the vice president has dual citizenship.
“Dr. Bawumia was a British citizen way back in 2009 before former President Kufuor brought him to Ghana,’’ Sam Pee noted in an interview on XYZ TV.
“Did Dr. Bawumia (the lying one) denounce his British citizenship before running with Akufo-Addo as his running mate? When did he denounce his British citizenship, and where are the documents to that effect?’’ Dr. Apaak quizzed in a post he shared on Twitter.
Contrary to these allegations leveled against the vice president, his spokesperson has vehemently stated that Dr. Bawumia holds no British citizenship in a Facebook post sighted by 1Family Radio.
“The attention of the Office of the Vice President has been drawn to a malicious social media allegation that the Vice President holds British citizenship while holding the office of Vice President, contrary to the laws of Ghana,’’ he wrote.
We wish to state in clear terms that Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia does not hold British citizenship and has never held British or any other citizenship other than being a Ghanaian. The allegation should be treated with the contempt it deserves,’’ Baako added.
