The former Minister of Food and Agricultural and also an NPP flagbearer hopeful, Dr. Afriyie Akoto has elaborated on why he wants to contest for the presidency in the 2024 general elections.
Comparing the outcome of the 2020 general election to that of the 2016 elections, Mr. Akoto believes that the NPP is not in a good shape and therefore he intends on building the party when he assumes power.
Speaking in an interview on Joy News monitored by 1Family Radio, the former minister noted that he wants to make make contributions to the development of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
“I want to be president because I want to be the flagbearer of the NPP which is what is driving me to give an opportunity for me to make a contribution to the New Patriotic Party,’’ he stated when asked why he wants to be the president.
According to him, the results of the 2020 general elections were not satisfactory because they now have 137 seats in parliament and the opposition party, NDC has the same number of seats. “We dropped from 169 to 137 which means we lost 36 constituencies,’’ Akoto added.
He furthered, ‘’the party is not in a good place and the interesting thing about this drop in our performance in the previous election wasn’t because our message wasn’t good enough. The problem has to do with the party because the party is the machinery.
Likening the current state of the NPP to an uber, he explained that should he call an uber and the uber comes but it has a faulty engine, he could sit in the car for hours and yet it won’t move, and this is what is happening to the NPP party.
