The Ministry of Roads and Highways has disapproved of the regular defacing of public road infrastructure through the use of advertisements and notices.
The Ministry claims that this defacing consists of the placement of outdoor advertising structures in the median at improper angles, such as billboards and signposts.
The Ministry expressed its displeasure with the continued actions in a statement released by 1Family Radio.
It said that the act will negatively impact both road safety and the integrity of infrastructure if it is not prevented.
“This practice is unacceptable and contravenes the provisions of the Ghana Standards Authority’s ‘’Advertisement-Specification for Outdoor Signs’’ (GS 847:2019) in Section 5, Sections 11 and 15 of Act 540, and Section 188 of LI 2180,’’ parts of the statement read.
“The practice results in the following: driver distractions, devaluation of the road infrastructure and furniture, poor aesthetics of the public realm, and misinformation to drivers.’’
“The Ministry wishes to urge the Advertising Association of Ghana to enforce its code of conduct with respect to the installation of outdoor advertisement structures.’’
“The Ministry hereby encourages all assemblies to consult the road agencies at the regional level before issuing permits for adverse notices along road corridors,’’ it added.
