Veteran Ghanaian rapper Okyeame Kwame has spoken up about how, despite his parents’ disapproval of his marriage because of their religious beliefs, he nevertheless got married to his wife.
His account states that because Annica Nsiah-Apua is a believer in Jehovah’s Witnesses, his mother in particular did not accept her as his bride.
He said that his wife had doubts about their union due to the discord between their families, but that she had come around to the idea of being married when they made the decision to live apart from their parents.
Speaking in an interview on Angel FM, Okyema Kwame noted that he told his parents about the marriage the night before the wedding because he was not bothered by their behavior, which prevented his parents from blessing the union.
“They never agreed to our marriage. We were going to play a show in Kumasi, but by then she was working for a law firm. When we got to Nkawkaw, she (his wife) said, ‘Okyeame, do you know that in Ghana we have three key elements in marriage?’’
“We have an ordinance, customary, Mohammedan, and another one. So with the people who don’t support our marriage, will they come and live with us? Then I said no, and after that, we went to register the marriage at KMA,’’ he narrated.
He said it was pointless for him to give in to his mother’s demands and break up with a woman he was interested in, as he would suffer if she behaved badly.
According to Okyeame Kwame, a marriage can flourish even without the blessings of one’s parents because God alone bestows blessings and is not human.
“Both families loved each other, but because of religion, they didn’t agree. I told my mom about the marriage a night before the marriage because I understood that I was not going to marry the lady for myself.’’
“Since we won’t live together, why would I marry a lady she wants and not what I want? What will I do with her blessing? It’s God who blesses us, not humans. My mother, who will leave soon, will choose a lady for me and then die. Will the girl misbehave towards me? Am I not a fool?’’ he asked.
