Hajia Abibata Shanni Mahama, an NPP parliamentary candidate, has radiated high on the vociferous scenes that unfolded during the parliamentary primaries on Saturday, January 27, in the Yendi constituency.
Accusing the Electoral Commission officials and the obligatory Member of Parliament, Umar Farouk Aliu Mahama, of equipping, she detailed the events in an interview on Eyewitness News.
“I applaud the EC and security on Saturday for a flawless election. The problem arose during the sorting process. Without knowing which ballot papers were sorted, the media was advised to remain silent during the counting; all we heard was 1. When the delegation inquired as to who, they replied on behalf of the MP, Faruk Aliu Mahama. During the counting process, the EC increased from 69 to 80, and I noticed that one of the officials was handling my ballots with force. After we approached him and he denied it, we discovered that he had pocketed my voting papers and had ink in his jacket.
She added that even though Farouk Aliu Mahama has been declared the parliamentary candidate-elect by Alhahi Masawudu Osman, the National Third Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party [NPP], the party does not have a candidate for parliament.
Following the votes on Saturday, the Electoral Commission has disassociated itself from the alleged announcement of the Yendi constituency winner. In a statement, the Commission stated that it had been alerted to a social media video that went viral and appeared to show an official announcement by the EC that claimed the results were in favor of Aliu Mahama, the incumbent Member of Parliament.
The Electoral Commission would like to notify the public that the results of the recently concluded NPP parliamentary elections for the Yendi constituency have not yet been announced. Approximately 785 of the 794 registered voters cast ballots, making 785 voters out of the total.
The presiding officer interrupted the ballot-counting process for the incumbent, Hon. Farouk Aliu Mahama, after tallying 296 votes in his favor.
The Commission noted that regrettably, the presiding officer was unable to finish the collation and announce the results due to the destruction of 489 ballots that were yet to be counted.
