Neil Armstrong Mortagbe, the former CEO of Hearts of Oak, has blasted Chris Hughton, the former head coach of the Black Stars, for benching Richmond Lamptey at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
A player’s locality does not preclude him from representing the Black Stars. We’ve all seen what Richmond Lamptey has done for Asante Kotoko, so it was difficult for me to see why, even in Majeed Ashimeru’s injury, he was never called upon. Richmond Lamptey wasn’t even on the bench at several points.
Lamptey did not make any of the matchday squads and was not deployed in any of Ghana’s three AFCON games.
He was one of the local athletes that qualified for the competition’s final squad. Not one of them received a minute. The Black Stars performed poorly in their three Group B games in the 2023 AFCON, drawing two and losing one.
The first group encounter ended in a 2-1 loss to Cape Verde, while the second and last group matches ended in 2-2 draws with Egypt and Mozambique, respectively. The Black Stars finished the 2021 AFCON group stage with just two points and a goal in debt. They had experienced a similar fate in the previous tournament.
