Derrick Safo Kantanka, a Ghanaian rapper better known by his stage name Amerado, has been candid about his experiences in the music industry and the misconceptions that people have about his financial situation and musical career.
The rapper described an encounter on MX24 TV, which 1Family Radio was intently watching, with some of his classmates. They assumed that because of his famous status, he had a lot of fortune and were curious about his present way of life.
“I recall them approaching me after class and asking to speak with me for a little talk. “Why is it that you have all the money, you are an artist, you have a car, and yet you are coming back?” they asked me during their in-person interview. I answered that I wanted to get all the information first because I didn’t have all the money.
He emphasized that the general public’s perceptions of celebrities often lead to certain expectations about them. For instance, fans may have an expectation that their favorite celebrities will drive the priciest and most stylish cars. He said, “When you are a celebrity, people have an image of you. It comes down to your story, but fans want to see you in a fancy Range Rover. I’m known to most people as the Kumasi native who has been battling to succeed in the music business.
Amerado, however, made it clear that he would not succumb to such pressures, stating, ”You don’t expect me to be driving a Range Rover while I can’t cater for my mother. I don’t let people’s perceptions get a hold of me. I just live my life as a normal guy. When I have, I give. When I don’t, I seek”. The rapper made it clear that he would continue making efforts to attain success in the music industry
