Following the floods brought on by the Akosombo spill, Mr. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the member of parliament for the North Tongu constituency, speaks out on behalf of the inhabitants of his region, saying, “We can’t accept one more week of government silence.”
Due to a recent surge in water levels, the government decided to dump some of the water from the Akosombo dam. Regrettably, this caused the demolition of more than 1500 homes and the eviction of more than 12,000 people in the North Tongu district alone.
Four weeks have passed since the very tragic event, and the administration has not provided any information regarding the potential relocation or resettlement of the families whose homes were destroyed due to the water. The honorable MP called the circumstances “disrespectful, unconscionable, and simply unacceptable.”
Speaking to the media on Sunday, November 5, 2023, at Mepe, Mr. Ablakwa said he had not yet seen any attempt by the government to provide accommodations for the populace. “People living in crowded classrooms for four weeks is inhumane, and the government stays silent as if this is all normal,” the man questioned the government. How much time would it take the government to declare a resettlement plan for floods caused by the TVA (Volta River Authority)?
Since he firmly feels that the VRA would not be let off the hook simply for the enormous mess they have made, the MP expressed his disgust with the VRA for their inability to take action to provide compensation for the numerous properties and the numerous sources of livelihood destroyed.
As the water levels drop, tensions and resentment grow among the locals, who wonder when the government will finally implement a plan to assist them in resettling and restoring the status quo.
