Kennedy Agyapong, a flagbearer candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has reacted to allegations made by Frederick Opare-Mensah, a former member of parliament for Suhum, that he requested $500 million in annual contracts from Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in exchange for resigning from his candidacy.
Speaking in an interview on Times FM, monitored by 1Family Radio, Ken Agyapong alleged that he was rather offered $800 million to step down from the party’s race for Dr. Bawumia.
He questioned, “Does he know how many people have approached me, but I have said I will never do it for the love of Ghana and the delegates?”
“In the event that he is unaware, the money they promised is $800 million. He should ask Mr. Oppong Bio if that is what they are saying, but I said no, I will not step down, Ghana first.’’
“You guys couldn’t purchase pickups in 2016. How come you can give me an offer of $800 million today? Thus, I responded, I won’t resign,” he continued.
In a media outburst, Opare-Ansah attacked Kennedy Agyapong, claiming he was unhappy because he had chosen to run for flagbearership in order to get even with Dr. Bawumia after the vice president had denied his request, which was a requirement in order to gain his support.
Ken Agyapong claims that he is steadfast in his quest to become president and that his determination to run was motivated only by the good of the public.
“Why would I take all this money for Ghana to go through hardship? I won’t do it, and I have not done it. Beside that, a number of elders have called on me, begging me to step down and become vice president.’’
“But if you make me Vice President, I have been told, to my face, that the only way the grassroots will vote for me is if I am leading Ghana, but I have been told that if I bring those who have served under this government, they won’t vote for me. So why should I even step down for us to go to the opposition? I won’t do it,’’ he noted.
