Ghanaian female vocalist, Abiana, has spoken against the pervasive trend among Nigerian musicians to appropriate Ghanaian music, duplicate it, and distribute it widely without giving it credit or acknowledgment.
Speaking with Berla Mundi on the Day Show, monitored by 1Family Radio, Abiana emphasized the difficulties faced by Ghanaian musicians, particularly with relation to the high life in Ghana and its potential for global fame.
Sometime ago, we used to say highlife was something. We were thinking about the tactics in Nigeria with Tony Tetula,’’ she said.
Abiana claims that Ghana’s culture has a significant influence on Nigerian music, which has occasionally modified Ghanaian music components as their own, often with greater success.
Even the Nigerians are still taking our stuff, making it much bigger, and naming it something else,’’ she noted.
“Why don’t we push ourselves and say highlife is our thing? So let’s just call ourselves highlife musicians, and then the rest will follow,’’ she added.
