The leaked recording detailing discussions on strategies for ousting the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akufo-Addo, has been validated by Daniel Burg Naabu, a former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
He claims that he purposely taped the conversation so that he could later present it to the president after becoming concerned about the IGP’s allegiance to the government.
Naadu made this confession when he appeared before the seven-member Parliamentary Committee entrusted with determining the authenticity of the recording.
Naadu was heard confessing that his voice was on the recording in snippets of the hearing obtained by 1Family Radio.
However, he claimed that because he lacks the necessary skills, he hired someone to record the material for him.
“I didn’t do it myself. I requested somebody who knows how to do the recording to come and do it for me. I didn’t use a phone. I went to the mall and got this ordinary tape,’’ he noted.
In response to why he decided to record their conversation, he stated, “Commander Asare said the IGP is not with the government or the NPP, and if we want to use the IGP for the 2024 elections, we cannot ‘break the eight’ because this IGP will let us lose the election because he is an NDC member.’’
“I was disappointed, and so I decided that I needed to get the information properly, and the proper way was to look for a tape recorder to tape all that we have been discussing so that when I send it to the president or anybody, they cannot deny it or that somebody will think that I am concocting this.’’
He continued, We, the chiefs, do not like lies because if I tell a lie, I will die. So the truth of this is that the tape is authentic.’’
Further denying the assertion that he leaked the audio, he said that President Akufo-Addo was the only person to whom he delivered a tape of the recording he made during his conversation with a number of senior police officers.
“I didn’t leak the tape. So I called Mr. Asare and asked him who sent the tape into the public domain, and he banged the phone on me. Then I called him again, and he refused to talk to me,’’ he said.
“But rather, he sent a message through my son that he would deal with me; he threatened me,’’ Bugri disclosed.
