Gen. Abdourahamane Tchiani, the leader of the Niger coup, has revealed that the country will only return to democratic rule after three years.
Following a meeting in the capital city of Niamey with mediators from the West African regional bloc Ecowas, he made this declaration.
Tchiani stated that Niger did not seek war but would vigorously defend itself against any foreign involvement at the meeting, which 1Family Radio monitored.
“If an attack were to be undertaken against use, it would not be the walk in the park some people think,’’ he said.
The leader of the Junta rekindled his criticism of the ”illegal and cruel” sanctions that the ECOWAS had placed on the landlocked nation.
The consequences have included power cuts that have caused blackouts in Niamey and other major cities, as well as the obstruction of necessary imports.
Food prices have increased as a result of truck drivers being detained for weeks waiting to deliver supplies.
“Sanctions are not conceived with the aim of finding a solution but to bring us to our knees and humiliate us,’’ he alleged.
While Gen. Tchiani did not provide specifics regarding the transfer of power, he did state that the coup leaders would host a dialogue in which the fundamentals of the transaction would be decided within 30 days.
