Kennedy Agyapong, a flag-bearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has promised to drastically raise the betting tax if elected president of Ghana.
He claimed that the detrimental effects of excessive gambling on young people’s futures had an impact on this choice.
Speaking in an interview on UTV that was monitored by 1Family Radio, Ken said that raising the tax on betting will discourage young people from engaging in it.
“I was being interviewed one time by a journalist, and he brought in the topic of betting.’’
“He argued that the NPP has imposed a tax on betting. I told him that I would even increase it from 10% to 30%,’’ he said.
“I have refrained from talking about it because there isn’t much employment.’’
He noted, “But if we had created employment, it would reduce the number of people who engage in betting.’’
“If a youth gets addicted to betting, he doesn’t have a future. So when I come, we will create enough employment for the youth,’’ he remarked.
“So, with all the advice I gave the youth, they took only that part to tell people that I said I would increase tax on bets. Yes! I said it and stood by it. I will do this to discourage the youth from going astray.’’
“I don’t care; if you will vote for me, go ahead; if you won’t vote for me too, that’s fine. But whatever that is, the truth is what I will say,’’ he added.
