The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has revealed that the marking and grading of the 2023 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) might be delayed due to some financial issues.
The WAEC claims that any delays in the government’s provision of the remaining funding for the tests could have an impact on the marking and, subsequently, the release of the results.
Speaking in an interview on Joy FM, monitored by 1 Family Radio, the Head of Public Relations at WAEC, John Kapi, revealed that the government has only settled 15% of the total arrears owed them.
“So far, for BECE 2021 and 2022, yes, we have received the arrears, but for this year, 2023, we received about 10.5 million Ghana cedis, which is 15 percent of the total payment due.’’
He added, “So obviously there are still some arrears that should be settled. They promise, of course, that they are going to send some money to us, so we are waiting,” he noted.
“What we’ve been able to do is the printing for what we are conducting. But for the marking and final processing of the result, we will have to get some more funds; otherwise, we may not be able to complete some sections of the process,” he disclosed.
