Professor Baffour Agyeman-Duah, a former UN senior governance advisor and expert, has alleged that Ghanaian politicians tend to see things from a better perspective when they are in opposition.
In his view, if not all politicians, then the majority of them, when they are not playing actively, are critics of the party in power; however, when the baton is handed over to them, they do worse than their predecessors.
Speaking in an interview with Citi Eyewitness, which was monitored by 1Family Radio, the former UN advisor noted that this trend in our politics is one of the major setbacks of the country.
“When a party is in opposition, they see all the evil in of the ruling party, and when the tables turn, they become the same way.’’
He continued, “In other words, our politicians seem to see better when they are not playing active politics, which is tragic for us.’’
His statements come on the heels of recent concerns raised by Yaw Osafo-Maafo pertaining to the confidentiality of asset declarations under the law by public officers.
According to the professor, the authenticity of the declaration by public officers can’t be ascertained because, after the declaration, everything is kept confidential between the public officer and the Auditor-General.
“Here in Ghana, the first important thing to do when you become a minister of state or hold positions in various sectors at public levels is to declare your asset.’’
“Personally, I think one problem with this declaration of asset is that after the declaration, everything is kept confidential between the Auditor General and yourself, and therefore it becomes very difficult for anybody to challenge the authenticity of your declaration,’’ he added.
