Coach Chris Hughton of Ghana has delineated his job and underscored his dedication to achieving optimal outcomes and performances for the team.
Hughton, who was appointed in February, has come under fire after his team suffered two defeats in October—a 2-0 loss to Mexico and a 4-0 loss to the United States.
During a BBC interview that 1Family Radio monitored, Hughton acknowledged the difficulties and stated that he was committed to taking lessons from both good and bad situations.
“My role as coach of the Black Stars is to get the best results and the best performances from the team. You can’t always get that, but what you can always do, you can always learn from your previous experiences, whether it’s good or bad.”
Hughton understood the significance of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where Ghana is matched up against Egypt, Mozambique, and Cape Verde in the group stage; nevertheless, he continued to concentrate on the upcoming challenge: the 2026 World Cup qualifying matches against Madagascar and Comoros.
“It’s wonderful and great to want to talk about AFCON, the tournament itself, but sometimes for coaches, it’s difficult because we have two very important World Cup qualification games before then. If your concentration is too far past that, then you can take your eye off what is, at this moment, the most important thing. The most important thing for us at this moment are our two World Cup qualification games,” he noted.
“Morrocco, Egypt, Senegal, Cameroon, Tunisia… I think that the level of teams in Africa is as strong as it’s ever been. I really do. I think there are so many now—so many more players playing at big clubs in Europe and on the world stage,’’ he added.
