Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the majority leader in parliament, has demanded that the Volta River Authority (VRA) management appear before Parliament to respond to inquiries about the Akosombo dam spill and its aftermath.
He claimed that by doing this, it would be possible to resolve some unanswered issues and figure out how to stop similar incidents from recurring in the near future.
On September 15, 2023, the VRA began expelling regulated water from the Akosombo and Kpong Dams as a result of a steady increase in the Akosombo reservoir’s water level and inflow pattern.
The leak caused thousands of people’s homes in Asuogyaman, Central Tongu, North Tongu, South Tongu, and several other locations to be swamped.
On Tuesday, October 31, 2023, the authority said that the regulated spillage of the Akosombo dam had come to an end.
Addressing parliament on Tuesday, which was followed by 1Family Radio, Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu said that the VRA ought to educate the house about the consequences of the leak and how to prevent it from happening in the future.
“I believe we may need to find some answers to some questions, and I guess the speaker is not yet here, but when the speaker comes, we will have some discussions with him,’’ he said.
“I believe it will be important for us to invite VRA to come and fully brief the house about what has happened, the repercussions, and how to avoid any future events,’’ Kyei-Mensah Bonsu added
The request from the majority leader comes as the nation is still dealing with the repercussions of the Akosombo dam spill.
Concerns have been raised over the long-term effects of the spillover on the economy and ecology, as many evacuated residents are still finding it difficult to rebuild their lives.
