The Achimota Magistrate Court found sixteen (16) thugs belonging to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) guilty of attacking the United Television (UTV) offices on Saturday, October 7, 2023, and fined them 200 penalty units, or GHC $2400 each.
According to information that we at 1Family Radio are receiving, the men were accused of plotting crimes and inciting riots. The court found them guilty after they entered a guilty plea to the charges.
The attackers broke into UTV’s studio on Saturday, October 7, during the prime-time entertainment show “United Showbiz.” They interrupted the live show and threatened to harm the host and her panelists.
Consequently, it was revealed that Ernest Owusu Bempah, the deputy director of communications, and other top officials of the ruling party had allegedly given the Klottey Korle Youth Organizer of the NPP the orders to lead the hoodlums.
They were incensed because a letter from the NPP leadership to UTV management demanding a reform of the United Showbiz panel was torn to pieces by A Plus, a panelist on the program.
The NPP thugs’ incursion was denounced by the Ghana Journalists Association, the Information Ministry, and other organizations.
The NPP’s Stephen Ntim, National Chairman, then apologized to the UTV management without reservation.
On Thursday, Chairman Ntim entered the Peace FM studios and openly denounced the NPP’s actions.
He apologized and promised that the party’s leadership would make sure that this disgusting behavior didn’t happen again.
