Football players should exercise caution and carefully read any contracts they are provided with during their careers, says former FC Basel defender Samuel Inkoom.
The 34-year-old right-back, who spent several years playing for major clubs in Europe, explained that some offers might not be advantageous to players, but they may consent to them due to ignorance and later come to regret it.
Speaking in an interview on Sports Ultras on 3FM, monitored by 1Family Radio, Inkoom confessed that there were times he wished he had someone to guide him in the past.
“Some of the decisions I made on my own would have been better if I had sought advice from an expert because they cost me a lot,’’ he noted.
‘’But all I’ll say is that football players shouldn’t sign contracts they don’t comprehend. If a team is interested in you, you have approximately four days before signing to read and comprehend the contract.’’
“There are contracts that can cause you to cry after signing, so you shouldn’t be in haste. There are certain clauses they may include in the contract that go far beyond the standard wage,” Inkoom said.
“I would use this chance to caution the young ones to be mentally mature before traveling overseas because it isn’t as easy as they see it on TV,” he advised.
