The new members of the Electoral Commission were appointed by the Council of State and not the president, Vera Wiredu, a member of the Communication team of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has stated contrary to the belief of some Ghanaians.
Her remarks come after some members of the NDC alleged that Dr. Peter Appiahene, one of the new appointees is an NPP patron at the University of Energy and Natural Resources.
She stated that the Council of State appointed the three new Electoral Commissioners after extensive discussion and later gave the names to President Akuffo-Addo for approval.
Speaking in an interview on TV3 monitored by 1Family Radio, she disclosed that the Council of State consists of chiefs and even some members of the NDC and they all agreed to select the new appointees.
Vera noted, “the Council of State did their research, did their selection, did their extensive consultations and then presented the names to the president in his office.’’
She reiterated that neither the president nor the NPP party selected the new members of the EC. “The NPP party did not present the names to the president neither did the president select these individuals,’’ Vera added.
According to Vera, the council is made up of wise and discerning individuals like chiefs and Hon. ET Mensah. She indicated that these people will not just select people who are not competent for the task ahead.
“There are intelligent individuals serving on the council, it consists of chiefs, NDC members and Hon. ET Mensah is also a member of the council,’’ she furthered.
“Let’s be careful not to create the wrong impression about the president to Ghanaians,’’ she urged.
