As a devout Christian and member of the Assemblies of God, former President John Dramani Mahama has publicly stated his position on the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer [LGBTQ] community, claiming that he is against all LGBTQ practices.
According to John Mahama, God created humans with a specific purpose in mind.
During his speech before Parliament on the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill 2021, often known as the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill, John Mahama discussed the government’s hesitation to support measures introduced by private members because of the accompanying expenses.
He stated that the Attorney General’s assessment of the President’s reluctance to support bills that would cost the government money was accurate.
Mahama advocated cooperation between the Legislature and the Executive in resolving the issue during his campaign tour.
He stated in a video shared by a sisterhood station, TV3, which was sighted by 1Family Radio, that he was a member of the Assemblies of God; the faith he had does not allow a man to marry a man, just as a woman cannot marry a woman. The Attorney General has stated that a private member motion can be passed but that it cannot come at the expense of the government, which is why the government has indicated that they would not sign the measure that is currently before Parliament.
In a more intimate statement, he voiced his displeasure, saying that as for him personally, as a critical thinker, there is no way he is going to consent to that bill since God truly understands why he formed us in that particular way.
