Ghanaians are calling for the dismissal of coach Chris Hughton, captain Andre Ayew, and goalie Richard Ofori following their embarrassing performance by the Black Stars of Ghana in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Because of the way the Black Stars gave up and gave Mozambique a two-goal lead, the anger of Ghanaians, who had low hopes for the squad, reached a new height.
Two penalties from Jordan Ayew, one in each half, gave the Black Stars the impression that they would easily make it to the round of 16. However, on minute ninety-one, Geny Catamo equalized from the penalty, and then Ghana’s hearts were broken by Reinildo Mandava’s header.
Mozambique ended last in Group B, and Ghana needs a miracle to move up to the top four teams in third position. Ghanaians are furious at the surprising draw that jeopardized their chances of qualifying.
Chris Hughton’s ire stems from some calls and decisions he made during the game, which many saw as a turning point in Ghana’s history. They think that Ghana lost out on a spot in the knockout round because of the strange and stupid substitution of Joseph Painstall for Andre Ayew.
Some argue that Andre Ayew’s performance and expensive penalty against Mozambique should be his last game wearing a Ghanaian jersey.
Attacks on Richard Ofori have elevated him to the status of enemy number one as a result of the error that led to Mozambique’s second goal.
