On October 31, 2023, a high court in Accra delivered a verdict in the three-year divorce case of Asamoah Gyan, a former Ghanaian football player.
In addition to granting the annulment of Asamoah Gyan and Gifty Gyan’s 2013 marriage, the court also issued directives on the paternity of the couple’s three children.
Gyan had earlier contested his paternity, which prompted the court to order a DNA test, the results of which established that he was, in fact, the children’s father.
The report by Dennis Law, which was sighted by 1Family Radio, read, “Initially, Asamoah Gyan denied paternity to their three children, seeking an annulment of their marriage. However, the court, in its decision on October 31, 2023, established that the three children are indeed the progeny of Asamoah Gyan.’’
Additional directives concerning the financial care of the children following the divorce include that “Asamoah Gyan is obligated to pay Gifty Gyan a monthly sum of 25,000 Ghana cedes.’’
“This stipend is allocated for the upbringing and welfare of the three children, excluding expenses such as school fees, medical and dental care, flight tickets, and various other childcare-related costs,’’ the report added.
As regards her substantial contribution for a share in Asamoah Gyan’s property, the court held that since she has contributed in kind to the acquisition of the properties, by being the one who solely catered for the children and lived with the children whilst the petitioner plied his trade, she was entitled to a share and therefore granted her: a UK property, a gas station at Prampram, a bedroom house at Spintex already purchased for her before the marriage in 2013, and two cars.
Regarding her substantial contribution for a share in Asamoah Gyan’s property, the court determined that she was entitled to a share because she had helped to acquire the properties in kind by being the only one to care for the children and live with them while the petitioner practiced his trade. She was thus given a UK property, a gas station in Prampath, a four-bedroom house in Spintex that she had already bought before getting married in 2013, and two cars.
