Baffour Gyan, the brother of the former Black Stars captain, has provided a thorough justification for why his brother Asamoah Gyan prevailed in his court battle with his former spouse Gifty Gyan.
The Accra High Court has settled the legal dispute between Asamoah Gyan and Gifty Gyan, which included matters concerning their annulled marriage and properties.
Based on Asamoah Gyan’s petition and further evidence given during the hearing, the court declared the marriage null and void.
The court affirmed Gifty’s early marriage in 2002, when she was barely 17 years old, as legal since there were not enough grounds to declare it null and void.
The court did, however, grant Gifty Gyan a property in the UK, a service station in Prampram, a four-bedroom house in Spintex that had been bought for her before their 2013 marriage, and two automobiles as compensation.
Furthermore, Gifty was awarded a GH¢25,000 monthly maintenance amount.
In an interview on Asempa FM that was monitored by 1Family Radio, Baffour Gyan clarified some misconceptions about the court’s ruling.
He emphasized that Gifty was the one who had been married before and that Asamoah Gyan had started the legal process to dissolve that union. The verdict from the court showed that Gifty deliberately deceived Gyan.
“My brother’s wife had already been married, and he sent it to the court to annul it. We received the ruling to the effect that the lady deceived my brother,’’ he clarified.
Baffour further underlined that Gifty’s possessions were gifts from Asamoah Gyan, and the court upheld her ownership rights. He added that Gifty’s attorneys had first asked for more than $1 million, but the court had turned down their request.
“The properties in the lady’s possession were gifts from Asamoah Gyan, and the court asked that she keep them. Her lawyers had wanted $1 million and more, but the court denied their request.’’
“Asamoah Gyan has been in contact with his children throughout this case and has been taking care of them, so the Gh¢25,000 a month support for the children is no news,’’ he added.
