Ghanaian gospel singer Gifty Adorye, better known by her stage name Empress Gifty, has counseled women in challenging marriages, urging them to walk out if their husbands are not treating them fairly.
She raised concern about why some women allow themselves to be taken advantage of by their partners, which causes them to become depressed when they have the option to start life afresh.
Empress Gifty stressed that women in unhappy marriages shouldn’t worry too much about what society thinks of them for being unmarried. Rather, they ought to put their mental health first.
In a video that 1Family Radio saw on her social media page, she queried why women would put up with abuse and heartbreak and urged them to stand up to criticism and societal expectations.
“Why would a beautiful woman like you sit down for a man to give you a broken heart? Why would you sit down your whole life for a man to give you depression? Because we are too concerned about what others will say, like, ‘You’ve divorced already and another marriage couldn’t succeed, what am I going to tell my relatives?’ Do they matter?” she asked.
Divorce, she pointed out, can lead to a more enjoyable and healthier existence when the circumstances call for it. She counseled women not to let marriage obstacles depress them because they often present doors to greater possibilities.
“Now that you’re alive and you know good and bad, run away from anything that will cost you your happiness. A woman who thinks society can determine her future, and her life has come to an end due to a situation. I want to tell you that this is the start of something God wants to do in your life. If he is leaving, let him go because he does not deserve a peaceful and beautiful woman like you,” she said.
Considering that she herself suffered a divorce in the past, her counsel for women is barely shocking.
