The University of Ghana’s General Assembly Elections on Sunday, October 22, 2023, were a wild affair.
During the election, some university students were seen fighting in a video that was shared by Univers TV and sighted by 1Family Radio.
The chaotic scenario at Mensah Sarbah Hall, where the poll was held, is captured in the widely shared video. Some students even resorted to stealing the ballot box.
The EC suspended the election due to the disruptive behavior of the students, who not only took over the vote box but also committed aggressive acts, such as attacking people and damaging the tables and chairs used for the event.
The turmoil was caused by the SRC general secretary, according to a statement made by the Electoral Commission.
The statement said that the general secretary’s attempt to overstep the EC’s constitutionally mandated authority and responsibilities in holding elections jeopardized the organization’s independence.
“The General Secretary’s unconstitutional attempt to usurp the powers of the Electoral Commission caused tremendous tension in the House, and this is what has led the Commission to call off the election in the interest of peace, order, and tranquility,’’ the statement noted.
The incident has been substantially denounced by the Students’ Representative Council (SRC), which has described it as depressing.
“The Executive Council of the UGSRC writes this communiqué with deep regret and disappointment regarding the recent incident that took place during our scheduled election for the Speaker position.’’
“It is disheartening to acknowledge the chaos and act of violence that transpired, resulting in harm to individuals and property damage,’’ parts of the SRC statements read.
