Over a hundred lives were lost in road accidents in July 2023, according to the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service.
According to a study from the department seen by 1Family Radio, the number of fatalities from traffic accidents rose by 30.07 percent in 2023. Additionally, it was said that in July 2023, the number of traffic accidents increased by 4.31 percent.
In the year 2023, 1,233 accidents involving 2,099 vehicles were reported. 186 people died, and 1328 were injured.
The number of recorded collisions, cars involved, fatalities, and injuries rose by 4.31%, 5.42%, 30.07%, and 8.76%, respectively.
For the same period in 2022, 1,182 crashes involving 1,991 vehicles were reported, resulting in 143 deaths and 1221 injuries.
When compared to July 2022, pedestrian knockdowns decreased from 224 to 213 in July 2023. From January to July 2023, a total of 8,137 road traffic accidents were also reported.
According to the data, there were 10,407 casualties in these accidents, including 1,272 fatalities and 9,135 injuries, involving 13,862 vehicles of all types (private, commercial, motorcycles, and bicycles).
Out of the 1,233 crashes reported in the month of July, 54% (670) were minor, 33 (405) were severe, and 13% (158) were fatal.
Comparably, out of the 8,137 road traffic accidents reported between January and July 2023, 54% (4,364) of them were minor accidents, 33% (2,713) were serious accidents, and 13% (1,060) were fatal accidents.
In general, there have been increases in all key indicators for July 2023, with the exception of pedestrian knockdowns, and decreases in all significant indicators from January to July 2023 as compared to the same time in 2022.
