Francis-Xavier Sosu, a Ghanaian lawyer and National Democratic Congress (NDC) legislator representing Madina, has commented on the ongoing controversy between the Ama Governor and the General Legal Council.
On Monday, July 31, 2023, Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo delivered a speech in Accra where she defended the General Legal Council’s decision to reject Elorm Ababio, better known on social media as Ama Governor, a call to the bar notwithstanding passing her bar exams.
Due to a complaint lodged against Ama’s behavior by Ms. Hajia Siduri, the General Legal Council held that she was ineligible to be admitted to the bar.
But speaking in an interview on Starr FM, monitored by 1Family Radio, the lawmaker stated that denying a law student a call to the bar because of her social media account is unlawful and wholly unfair.
‘’I think the Legal Council is being unfair to this student; they are actually acting lawlessly when you ask my view in respect of this matter.’’
“If I were a student, I would have challenged this in court. Notwithstanding the fact that there is a challenge, it’s the reason why some of you are calling for a review of laws on the General Legal Council, and so on and so forth. Because the Chief Justice making this comment is the Chairman of the Council,’’ he said.
“So if she chairs the General Legal Council and has direct influence over oversight responsibility for legal education, she is the one taking this decision.’’
If you challenge this decision in court, who is going to appoint the judges? It’s the Chief Justice. How do you get justice in this kind of arrangement?’’ he quizzed.
