The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has raised concern over the number of workers on the pension scheme.
Out of the 9.9 million salaried workers, 1.9 million frequently pay their pension, according to the Head of Public Affairs at SNNIT, Charles Akwei Garshong.
He finds this number of contributors alarming because only this percentage will receive pension payments when they retire.
This claim was made by Mr. Akwei at a workshop intended to inform the public and the media on the significance of paying SNNIT.
“At the moment, we have a very small quantity, which is roughly 1.9 million workers contributing to the pension system,’’ he told the journalist during the program, monitored by 1Family Radio.
“Only about 1.2 million private sector employees and 38,000 self-employed people are making contributions to the program,’’ he continued.
However, he asserted that the public, particularly salaried workers, will come to understand the significance of the program through education and sensitization.
“We believe we will be able to help reduce old-age poverty in the future by increasing the number of people on the scheme once we sustain this education, and we always focus on reaching out to them irrespective of where they find themselves, whether online or at their various places of work,” he added.
