The vetting of the Chief Justice nominee by the Appointment Committee is ongoing at the Parliament of Ghana today, May 26, 2023.
Prior to Chief Justice Kwasi Anin-Yeboah’s retirement, President Akuffo-Addo appointed Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkornoo in April.
The president stated that the purpose of her nominations was to fill any vacancies that might arise after Chief Justice Kwasi Anin-Yeboah departs her position. On May 24, 2023, Justice Yeboah retired from active service.
The vetting by the Appointment Committee is to ascertain Justice Torkornoo’s proficiency for the role of Chief Justice.
If she is approved by the committee, Justice Torkornoo will become the third female Chief Justice in the country.
