Ghanaian lawyer and a leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Otchere-Darko has refuted the claims that he imposed Chris Hughton on the Ghana Football Association (GFA).
Some section of Ghanaians believe that Gabby influenced the GFA officials to appoint Chris as the head coach. Some has alleged that Chris wasn’t given a long-term contract by the GFA because he wasn’t their choice.
However, Otchere has stated that, although Chris Hughton, the head coach of the Black Stars is a good friend of his, he has no hands in his appointment as the coach of senior national team.
In an exclusive interview with Kegyiwa Nankasa on his YouTube channel monitored by 1Family Radio, the politician asserted that Chris Hughton’s appointment was the sole decision of the GFA adding that the FA made the right decision by appointing him.
“Chris Hughton was appointed by the GFA and not me,’’ he noted. He furthered that although Chris is a Tottenham fan and he is an Arsenal fan, they are very good friends.
Gabby Otchere-Darko reiterated that he didn’t use his power or status to influence the GFA officials in appointing his friend as the coach.
“Chris is the choice of the GFA and I think they have made the right choice. I believe the GFA in their wisdom appointed someone with experience because there was not enough time.’’
“Anytime there is vacancy, interested people lobby and at the time, most people thought Chris is the best person for the job and the GFA also needed someone who already knew the squad,’’ he added.
