Henry Quartey, the lawmaker for the Ayawaso Central Constituency has appealed to the government to build a hospital purposely for the Members of Parliament.
According to him, the nature of their work requires that they get medical specialists to cater for their healthcare.
He made this submission parliament on the 31st of March, 2023 in regards to the death of the MP for Kumawu, late Hon. Philip Basoah.
“Mr. Speaker, I think this is an opportunity to humbly inquire if there are structures in place for us by way of counselling, by way of psychologists and also by way of specialist?’’ he quizzed during his submission which was monitored by 1Family Radio.
He stated that there should be medical facility and a recreational center purposely for legislators as an organ of government.
Mr. Henry furthered that this facility will not only cater for the healthcare needs of the MPs but the speaker and all staff of parliament. “This may be a little bit biased but it is important we get hospitals not just for lawmakers but the speaker and all who aid in the work of parliamentary practices,’’ he stated.
The lawmaker disclosed that the premature death of Philip Basoah might be an effect of the pressures he was receiving from his constituency. He narrated that a post he had read earlier indicated that the late MP was subjected to so much pressure and problems in his constituency and other MPs have similar experiences.
He added that in order to avoid such untimely death of MPs, there should be hospitals and recreational centers for them. He explained that it is almost impossible for a lawmaker to park his vehicle at any ordinary recreational center because the media will come after them.
“If you drive around Accra on weekends, you can’t find a place to relax as a lawmaker because the it will circulating all over the news the next day,’’ he said.
