Seth Terkper, the former Minister of Finance under the Mahama government has hinted that the patriotic pleas by the government will not solve the economic crisis of the country.
The current Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta in his speech on February 6,2023, pleaded with all individual bondholders to sign up to the Domestic Debt Exchange Program by the government. He also used the phrase “help me, let me help you” to ask for the participation of Ghanaians in restoring back macroeconomic stability.
Reacting to this, Mr. Terkper has stated that the plea by the Finance Minister will not resolve the mess the country is facing now. He made this statement in a post he shared on his Twitter handle on February 9, 2023 which was sighted by 1Family Radio.
According to him, this current economic hardship did not start now and therefore it cannot be wished away with patriotic pleas. The former minister furthered that the government terminated the Debt Suspension plan but we are still pleading with the IMF to help us restore macroeconomic stability.
He added the government needs to show remorse for mismanaging the economy of the country because this might influence the bondholders to sign up to the DDEP.
