Abena Osei-Asare, the Deputy Minister of Finance, has beseeched the pension bondholders to exercise patience in regards to the government’s failure to settle their coupons.
According to her, the current economic woes are a major reason for the government’s failure to pay their coupons.
Speaking to a group of pensioners who were picketing at the forecourt of the Ministry of Finance on June 1, 2023, monitored by 1Family Radio, the Minister, who doubles as the MP for Atiwa East, stated that the failure to meet the deadlines for the payment of their coupons was not intentional.
“We don’t intend to stop them, but we also have to let you know that sometimes it’s difficult because it’s the ability to pay, and when it’s not there, it becomes a struggle,” she said.
“Therefore, she explained, “for the time being, we should concentrate on the five unpaid coupons before discussing how we would handle the principal payment.’’
She expressed her apologies to the retirees for the challenges and inconveniences brought on by the government’s failure to pay coupons by the deadlines.
“I genuinely get where you’re coming from. This has never occurred when coupons are available for payment and the government is having financial difficulties.’’
“But since everyone is aware of the current situation, I kindly ask that everyone sit down and discuss it so that you can determine the best course of action,’’ Abena added.
