In the 2023 edition of the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ), Adisadel College, the 2016 winners, were defeated by St. Louis Senior High School, an all-girls school in the Ashanti Region, with a score of 53 points.
Since no all-girls school has ever won the coveted NSMQ trophy, this accomplishment has left observers and the NSMQ community giddy with anticipation.
Abuakwa State College, Adisadel College, and St. Louis competed in the one-eighth stage of the tournament. As each team fought for a coveted berth in the competition’s next round, there was an obvious sense of anxiety.
With 19 points, St. Louis led the contest in the first round of questions, closely followed by ADISCO with 15 points. With 10 points, Abuakwa State College triumphed.
St. Louis continued to lead the race as it entered the second round, scoring 25 points. Abuakwa State College scored six points, while Adisadel College trailed with fourteen.
With five right answers out of ten in the third round—which is frequently the “problem of the day”—Adisadel College and St. Louis were tied. Abuakwa State College came in second, scoring three points.
The true-or-false fourth round turned out to be the pivotal one. With 46 points, St. Louis proved they were the best squad in the competition. They also had a 53-point lead going into the fifth and final round.
It was quite the stunner. Although no one thought it would happen, everything is conceivable on this grand stage.
The auditorium exploded with trolling and applause. There was an eerie quiet on one side of the auditorium, which was etched in the famous black and white.
