A Ghanaian renowned lawyer and a leading member of the New Patriotic Party Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko has expressed his displeasure on Sophia Akuffo’s participation in the picketing by the pensioners at the Finance Ministry.

Sophia Akuffo, the former Chief Justice on February 10, 2023 joined the pensioners at the ministry of finance to protest against the inclusion of the pensioners in the Domestic Debt Exchange Program.

According to her, the decision by the government to include the pensioners in the DDEP is unlawful, wicked and disrespectful. Sophia added that the government should rather put measures in place to solve the current economic mess of the country and account for the loans he had taken.

Some Ghanaians have lauded the former Chief Justice for her bravery and courage. They believe that Sophia has demonstrated true citizenry by standing against her own political party.

However, Gabby Asare-Otchere has expressed his displeasure with her decision to join the pensioners to picket at the ministry of finance. According to him, Sophia is at liberty not to sign up the DDEP. “Why picket over something you don’t like and you have the right not to sign up,’’ he quizzed in a post on his Twitter page.

Gabby furthered that Sophia could have just exempted herself from the DDEP without necessarily asking the government to exempt all the pensioners.

Richard Ahiagbah, the communications director of the NPP has also stated that Sophia has erred in her decision to join the pensioners to picket. He emphasized that the DDEP is voluntary so her decision to picket is baseless.

he indicated that some individual bondholders are willing to sign up and they are not even protesting therefore, Sophia should not protest if she is not willing to sign up.
