Hon. Alban Bagbin, the speaker of Parliament has taken a swipe at the comment made by Kamala Harris on the anti-gay bill.
The Vice President of the United States of America, Kamala Harris met President Akuffo-Addo at the presidency yesterday, March 27, 2023 where they discussed issues pertaining to the economy, women empowerment and human rights.
One of the issues they spoke about was the LGBTQ community. According to her, this is an issue of human rights and equality therefore the rights of these people must be protected and they should be given the chance to choose their sexuality.
However, speaking at the Breakfast meeting with the Christian Fellowship committee of Parliament, speaker Bagbin has described the comment made by Kamala as an undemocratic statement.
“I was very excited when Pope Francis instructed that no Reverend Father should celebrate over the marriage of lesbians or gays. If Rome has spoken, then it’s final,’’ he stated during the meeting which was monitored by 1Family Radio.
He therefore urged the Constitutional Committee of parliament to bring their reports on the Anti-Gay Bill without any intimidation.
Speaker Bagbin indicated, “what Kamala Harris did yesterday shouldn’t be tolerated because it is undemocratic. What is democracy? That someone should order to you what is bad and good. Unheard of, because we are determined to degrade ourselves and continue begging?’’ he quizzed.
“We have had more than enough of such instructions. God created more than adequate for every single person, we will pass the Bill,’’ he furthered.
According to him, not even the president has the mandate to interfere in the Anti-Gay Bill.
“A word to President Akuffo-Addo, you have no right to intervene in the Bill before Parliament. That response he gave, he should wait until we pass the Bill and he is instructed to implement it, that is where he comes in.”
“Let’s get something clear, according to the law, we will finalize the bill before the president can implement it,’’ he noted.
