The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has provided clarification on his widely circulated statement that a private developer had purchased his official Cantonments apartment.
The aforementioned remark was made during a speech at the Speaker’s Breakfast Forum on November 20, which was hosted at the Swiss Spirit Alisa Hotel in Accra.
He began by highlighting the difficulties that Parliament as a body encounters by mentioning the buildings and land that had been lost and were still being sought after. He then made a humorous remark about his own land that almost went away.
Later, in the forum, he was compelled to address the aforementioned commenters in a video that the Daily Graphic newspaper posted later in the day.
“I did not say my residence was sold, but this was just a comment in passing that it was almost sold, but luckily, I was in possession, and I said it was when they went to the Lands Commission that they realized from the search that it was the residence of the Speaker,’’ he said.
“Don’t, after all the beautiful things that I have said, go and report on sensationalism and mar the beauty of the forum,” he noted during his submission, which was monitored by 1Family Radio.
“Actually, as we invite the media into the committee meetings of the House, we are developing guidelines, and that is done globally,’’ he added.
