Fifteen television stations have received warnings from the National Communications Authority (NCA) and the National Media Commission (NMC) for allegedly breaking media and broadcasting laws.
The warning comes in response to complaints about content these TV stations nationwide broadcast that were filed by about 318 people who took part in a community monitoring initiative that was started from October 31 to November 15, 2023.
The content that was reported included pornography, occult practices, money-doubling scams, money rituals, and bogus lotteries.
The two state agencies said in a statement seen by 1Family Radio that the stations that got the most complaints were
Advice TV, Big TV, Passion TV, Nkabom TV, Seekes TV, Asomafo TV, Adwenpa TV, Eagle TV, Best TV, Diamond TV, X TV, Asomdwie TV, Energy TV, Funny TV, and Elephant TV
The NMC reported on 224 instances of money doubling, 83 instances of money rituals, 24 fraudulent lotteries, 18 instances of occult practices, and 13 instances of pornography in its half-monthly report.
The involved television stations have received warnings from the regulatory organizations asking them to stop their actions immediately in order to avoid penalties.
“For the stations listed above, we hereby serve them notice to cease and desist from those activities; otherwise, there will be severe consequences,’’ parts of the statement noted.
George Sarpong, the NMC’s executive secretary, applauded the public for actively using the toll-free complaints line to report objectionable material.
“It is their productive investment that has made this possible. We also commend the active citizens who demonstrated their commitment to quality broadcasting by taking time to make the recorded complaints,’’ it added.
The NMC stressed that the goal of the cooperative monitoring program is to empower community members to participate in media oversight and enable regulators to rectify deficiencies in broadcast content.
