The criterion for selecting a candidate in the upcoming NPP primary election should be competence, not religion, according to Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh.
Dr. Prempeh believes that the primary consideration in an election should be a candidate’s capacity to provide the people with the economic stability they require.
Speaking on various platforms during a meeting with artisans and NPP delegates from the Manhyia South constituency on Friday, October 27, 2023, he stated that since all religions have coexisted peacefully in Ghana for a considerable amount of time, it is risky for anyone to use religion as a political wedge in any election, whether it be a national election or an internal party election.
“I, Matthew Opoku Prempeh, was named after a Muslim, and the Regional Chief Imam of the Ashanti Region is my brother,’’ Dr. Opoku noted during his submission, which was monitored by 1Family Radio.
“What this should tell you is that, in my family, some are Christians and some are Muslims. This situation is also existent in a lot of families.”
“It is therefore unacceptable to create partitions and divisions on religious lines,” he added.
The lawmaker for Manhyia South stated that NPP supporters should be determined to actively campaign for the party and should take pride in the accomplishments of the administration during the last seven years.
“The unfortunate global happenings have made governments across the world unpopular; however, the record will show that we have performed better even under these circumstances,” he noted.
He expressed confidence that the NPP would win the elections scheduled for December 2024 and said that the party has managed the economy with greater competence than the NDC under John Mahama.
Dr. Prempeh advised Manhyia South delegates to peacefully exercise their right to vote on November 4, 2023, emphasizing that the party’s unity is essential for an overwhelming NPP win in 2024.
