Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, a flagbearer candidate for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), claims that if the November 4 delegates’ conference is set up to support a particular candidate, the party will suffer a great deal.
The party’s cohesiveness and credibility may be damaged as a result, according to Dr. Afriyie.
In an interview with JoyNews that 1Family Radio monitored, the politician stressed the need for fairness and how it can jeopardize the party’s unity, as well as its efforts to prepare for the general election against the NDC.
“I am prepared to give the benefit of doubt and hope that everything will be alright because the implication of all this is the unity of the people,’’ he said.
“If we are not seen to be having a level playing field after November 4, it is going to be very difficult to unite the party against the NDC, and for me, that is my worry.”
He continued, “Because if people feel that they have not been fairly treated, how do you expect them to cooperate with the party after the contest? So I think it is in the interest of the party to ensure that we have a level playing field.’’
Speaking about a candidate’s decision to leave the party, Dr. Afriyie Akoto stated that Mr. Kyerematen’s justifications for withdrawing from the race prior to announcing his departure from the party are legitimate.
“Of course, I don’t manage information the way he has, and I still believe that with a person like Mike Ocqyaye in charge, things can be corrected.”
“But we have rules and regulations that say that if you are a party official, you don’t define or come out to say that you are supporting this person or that person, but look at what is happening.’’
“The whole government, the whole parliament, the whole party, most of the party managers, and so on have come out openly to say that they support one person, and it goes against the rules. So there is something wrong with the party.’’
In addition, he bemoaned the disciplinary committee’s protracted delay in disclosing the results of their investigations into violations that were brought to light following the congress of superdelegates.
“Up to today, there is absolutely no report from the Ghana Police Service to show that violence, which is a crime, occurred,” he added.
