In the run-up to the November 4 primary, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia has bemoaned the way certain contenders in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential flagbearership contest are spreading false information about him.
He claimed that these opponents, who remained anonymous, were determined to sow division among the NPP’s membership.
On Tuesday, October 24, 2023, Bawumia informed the delegates in the Tatale-Sanguli constituency in the Northern Region that he was hearing a single falsehood about himself or his stance on problems every day.
“I am hearing a different lie every day as I am sitting down and watching what they are saying,’’ he said during his address, which was monitored by 1Family Radio.
He addressed three lies that he alleged had surfaced just recently. First, he addressed Kennedy Agyapong’s allegation that the vice presidential candidate’s team paid for the votes of certain superdelegates with $100,000 and pickup trucks.
“They say I have given all constituency chairmen, 275 constituency chairmen, a hundred thousand cedis, and a pick-up. Have you seen any pickups here for your chairman? This is just a ridiculous lie,’’ he noted.
In response to the claim that he is against increasing the electoral college, the vice president said that this could not be further from reality.
“How can this happen? It is not possible for me to stop polling station executives and electoral area coordinators from voting. This was a national conference decision, and I was very supportive of expanding the electoral college to allow polling station executives and electoral area coordinators to vote, and by the grace of God, they will continue to vote,’’ he explained.
The final topic he brought up was the speculation that current lawmakers would like to be exempt from opposition in the 2024 elections; he is purportedly in favor of this stance.
“How can I say that? The party’s constitution cannot even allow that. This party is stronger when we have democracy working, and so I will never say any sitting MP must go unopposed. There must be consensus in all constituencies, and so that lie should be left alone.’’
“But as I have said, their tactics are that “if you miss the ball, you miss the man,’’ but as for this one, they will miss the man because we will not allow their lies to take root,’’ he added.
