The very experienced Egypt will present a formidable challenge for the Ghanaian Black Stars in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), according to head coach Chris Hughton.
He also acknowledged that he doesn’t know a lot about Mozambique and Cape Verde, Ghana’s two group opponents.
The competition in Ivory Coast, which is scheduled to start on January 13, 2024, has Ghana and record-holder Egypt in Group B. Ghana’s opening game against Cape Verde is scheduled to take place in Abidjan.
In an interview observed by 1Family Radio, Hughton made it apparent to Ghanaian FA media how powerful he believed Egypt to be.
“Egypt are a very experienced side, very experienced AFCON campaigners, and I think they have more wins than any other country. For sure, they are very tough opponents. Despite recognizing the challenge, Hughton expressed the team’s eagerness to compete against one of the best teams in African football,’’ he said.
In reference to Mozambique and Cape Verde, Hughton commented, “Mozambique and Cape Verde are two teams that I don’t know so much about. However, we will do all of our homework over the coming months and watch their games now and before the tournament starts,’’ he noted.
He acknowledged the erratic nature of group draws in his closing remarks, adding, “But I think whenever a group comes out, you always think that it could have been better for us and could have been worse for us.’’
