Veteran Ghanaian gospel musician Selina Boateng has launched a campaign against body shaming, particularly celebrities trolled on social media.
She contends that female public personalities should be treated with respect and compassion by their supporters since they are simply ordinary people with feelings just like everyone else, not some sort of superhuman.
Speaking in an interview with Graphic Showbiz that was monitored by 1Family Radio, she discussed the detrimental impacts of body shaming on any individual, regardless of their level of popularity or achievement.
“The effects of body shaming are not confined to the public eye. They trickle down to influence societal attitudes towards body image and self-esteem, and this toxic behavior needs to stop,’’ she said.
“Behind every celebrity’s public persona lies a human being with emotions, insecurities, and vulnerabilities.’’
“When you make mockery of someone’s appearance, you’re not just attacking their image, but you’re also affecting their mental and emotional well-being,’’ Selina continued.
The “Alpha and Omega” singer, who has previously spoken out about her personal challenges with body image, agreed that body positivity was crucial and that no one should have to endure unpleasant remarks about their physical appearance.
When asked to what extent she planned to take initiative, Selina revealed that her support of body acceptance went beyond her online persona. In order to solve the problem, she aimed to cooperate with other artists to develop workshops, seminars, and awareness campaigns.
“Celebrities continue to hold immense influence on social media, and I am very positive that if we join hands together, we can foster a healthier online culture. I have realized that music has the power to touch people’s hearts and change perspectives.’’
She furthered, “As artists, we have a responsibility to promote positive values and help build a supportive environment for everyone, regardless of their appearance.’’
“Music has the power to touch people’s hearts and change perspective,’’ she added.
