The Criminal Offenses Amendment Act, 2023, and the Armed Forces Amendment Act, 2023, which were recently passed by Parliament to replace the death penalty with life in prison, have received President Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo’s approval.
News reaching us on 1Family Radio is that on Wednesday, August 2, 2023, the bills received the president’s assent. The Criminal and Other Offenses (Amendment) Bill, 2022, and the Armed Forces (Amendment) Bill, 2022, were passed by the Ghanaian Parliament on Tuesday, July 25, 2023, and Thursday, July 27, 2023, respectively, to replace the death penalty with a sentence of life in prison.
The death penalty is a type of capital punishment mandated by the constitution that stipulates that certain offenses must be punished by death.
For some crimes in Ghana, such as murder, treason, and genocide, the death penalty is a sine qua non. But over the years, some civil society groups have been advocating for the repeal of the death penalty.
