Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, the national chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has bemoaned the current state of the country’s politics.
He contends that the Akufo-Addo administration is far worse than any military rule Ghana has ever experienced.
Speaking in an interview on Onua TV’s morning show with Captain Smart, which was monitored by 1Family Radio, Asiedu Nketiah noted that President Akufo-Addo has made a fool out of Ghanaians who supported him to fight against the military government of Acheampong.
“Since 1992, we have been on track to improve on the year before with each passing year. I am hurt by the fact that Nana Addo’s reign has made our politics and governance worse,’’ he said.
“I’ve had some crisscrossing with Nana Addo, which is why I’m hurt. We were quite active as students back then when we rose to fight against the military regimes of Acheampong and Akuffo.’’
‘’We were actively involved as students in the People’s Movement for Freedom and Justice, which was steered by individuals like Nana Akufo-Addo. At the time, we viewed him as a hero who, if given the chance to serve as president by God, would demonstrate democracy.’’
He continued, “Even if we are not in the same party, when he ultimately became president, we all believed that he would at least not violate some limits. However, it has reached a point where, when evaluating his record as president, he has done worse than the Acheampong and Akuffo governments, which we were trying to overthrow.’’
“He has thus fooled us, and I am hurt by this. Because it has turned out that the actual democracy he was urging us to fight for was just him looking for an opportunity to enrich himself and his family, I feel like we were all just being foolish by following him.’’
Asiedu Nketiah added, “It means that he has made a mockery of us, and when I reflect on this when I’m sleeping, it hurts me.”
