Veteran Ghanaian hip-hop artist and mother of two has opened up on why she decided to have her second child at the age of 43.
The ’16 Years’ hitmaker attributed the desire and desperation for a second child to social pressure and expectations.
Appearing as a guest on UTV’s United Showbiz, which was monitored by 1Family Radio, Mzbel noted that many Ghanaians assume she is incapable of giving birth, and some have even conjectured that her firstborn, Adepa, was an adopted child.
“Even Adepa was mentioned in a comment at one point, along with the claim that I had adopted him. She continued, “He has previously informed me that when he goes to school and tells people I am his mother, they do not believe him and instead tell him he is adopted.
“There was a time when I used to adopt kids and take care of them, and whenever I go for an interview, they bring up the kids I’ve adopted even though it wasn’t a legal adoption.’’
“Most of them were children whose parents could not provide for them. Consequently, a lot of people assumed that I had adopted these kids because I was either unable to have children of my own or for some other reason,” she explained.
Mzbel claims that all of these criticisms from some Ghanaians compelled her to have a second kid in order to prove to her critics that she is capable of bearing children of her own.
“I decided to have my child, and it doesn’t matter how old I am, looking at the things I have been through in life and how people are constantly talking about me adopting kids.”
“I prepared for it, and it actually arrived. I found the gender I was seeking as well. My outburst on social media about how this is my biological child and not an adopted one was inspired by my excitement,’’ Mzbel said.
